The Vision

The heart of Reformed Pendulum comes from a passion for the unity of the Church, the advancement of Christ's kingdom and a desire for Christian families to thrive so that they might be in a position to advance the kingdom of God. Reformed Pendulum seeks to respond to the amazing paradox that though there are hundreds of thousands of Christians zealous for the Word of God and equally zealous in their desire to apply it, they wind up fighting against each other, rather than fighting against the “forces of darkness” and advancing the kingdom of God.

What do we believe that has caused this paradox to exist and what can help solve this paradox? We believe that many Christians do not understand what it truly means to be a Christian and what the Gospel of Christ is (Christ's inaugurated kingdom). Because of these misunderstandings, false boundary lines are drawn concerning the definition of what a Christian is and hence unneeded ecclesial schism and division is caused. Unfortunately this has resulted in whole denominations and movements whose primary distinctions are as a result from an ignorance of church history, an over-reaction against theological error, a lack of hermeneutical and exegetical acumen. No small amount of damage to the Church's ability to advance against the gates of hell has been effected.

This paradox of division in the Body of Christ not only has caused great harm to the Church but also in the lives of many Christian families and individuals as well. Too many families are bound unnecessarily by rules and regulations that are not required by God's Word because of the rampant faulty hermeneutical frameworks and unscholarly exegetical approaches that exist within certain movements and denominations. Many sons and daughters who have been raised in this context are now disenchanted with Christianity and are at odds with their families or spouses. How can these families advance the kingdom of God when their personal lives have been shattered and are in ruin?

Reformed Pendulum's goal is to reverse this tide of schism and division that is affecting so many churches and families across the United States and beyond. We want to accomplish this by being a gracious but scholarly organization that would help bring unity among the Church by giving Christians a correct view of church history, hermeneutics and exegesis and consequently what the Gospel of Christ really is that will then lead to a greater charity and unity within other church traditions, communions and even within families.

The Name

“Pendulum” refers to the tendency of men and movements to overcompensate when correcting theology or practice. Once the proverbial pendulum has begun to change direction away from one error, it often passes the mark of truth and swings into the opposite error. In western Christendom this pendulum swing has resulted in tragic ecclesial schism and division. It is our goal to help “reform” some of these over-compensations in both the Protestant churches and with the Catholic faithful. Our passion is for the unity of the Church and thus the advancement of Christ's kingdom through the blessing of the Father, in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit wtih a focus on the Gospel rooted in Scripture in order to provide sure and scholarly answers to various theological and historical questions that relate to the Church.

The Goals

1. To promote the "unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" by urging all believers in Christ to unite on the Gospel and remove false boundary markers on what it means to be a Christian.

2. To educate and stimulate dialog among Christians of all orthodox church traditions and communions on both the richness and the diversity of the Church through challenging and stimulating scholarship regarding the history of Christ's Church that will lead to greater charity and unity within the Body of Christ.

3. To help Christians "rightly divide the Word of Truth" by exposing faulty hermeneutical and exegetical approaches. Misinterpreting and misapplying the Word of God can have catastrophic results in churches and in families by creating schism and division among the brethren. We wholeheartedly believe that phariseeism, either manifested by proclaiming a particular standard as God's standard that is not God's standard or by creating false boundaries of what defines Christian orthodoxy or holiness, prevents Christians from advancing the kingdom of Christ and living a complete Spirit-filled life. We believe that part of helping the Church avoid phariseeism is done by identifying areas where certain movements in the Church have gone "beyond what is written" because of their lack of "accurately handling the Word of Truth".

The Attitude

1. Avoid the use of pejorative terms towards those with whom we disagree but to instead speak gently, humbly, patiently and in love (Ephesians 4:2, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."; Ephesians 4:15, "Speak the truth in love"). This is something that all Christians need to learn. We want to encourage others to have the attitude of Ephesians 4:29-32, "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you."

2. Avoid alienating other Christians and other attitudinal approaches that would lead to further bitterness and dissension. Instead we want to encourage others to apply Romans 14 so that we all might "stop passing judgment on one another [Romans 14:13]" and to "accept him whose faith is weak [Romans14:1]" instead of looking down on them. We are too seek to "make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification [Romans 14:19]" because we are commanded to "be diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling. [Ephesians 4:3]"

3. Be humble. We have all made unwise decisions and have been mistaken in our beliefs and yet the Lord was merciful in His lovingkindness towards us. So how much more should we show love, patience and mercy to those with whom we disagree. Romans 14:8-12, "If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. It is written: 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God."

4. Stimulate vigorous yet friendly and loving dialogue with those with whom we disagree. We do not believe it to be dishonoring nor divisive to have dialogue centered around Holy Scripture and Church history and subsequently how to interpret and apply it.
